Set mining in poker: when to call with small pairs

Calling a raise with a small pair to flop a set only pays off if the stacks are deep enough to win a lot when you hit.

5♣5♦
The example hand: Hero in the BTN, NL10 with 100 bb

The idea

With a small pair (22 to 66) you'll rarely win without improving. But when you flop a set, your hand is very well hidden and you can win a whole stack from someone holding top pair or an overpair. Set mining means calling preflop with those big pots in mind.

The math

You flop a set or better roughly 1 in 8.5 times (11.8%). For every time you hit, you lose your call about 7.5 times; to make up for it, when you hit you have to win much more than you paid. That's why the usual rule is to call only if the effective stack (the smaller of the two) is at least 15–20 times the cost of the call. Out of position, ask for an even bigger margin.

When it works best

  • In position: you control the size of the pot and get paid more when you hit.
  • Against opponents who call: the player who can't let go of top pair pays you; the one who folds everything doesn't.
  • With deep stacks: at 100 bb, against an open to 3 bb, the stack is more than 30 times the call.

How to play the set

On boards with draws, bet or raise early: you charge the draws and protect yourself. On dry boards you can call one street so your opponent keeps betting, and raise later.

Common mistakes

  • Calling 3-bets with small pairs and short stacks: there isn't enough left to get paid.
  • Staying in the hand without hitting "because I've already called".

The example hand, step by step

Watch it in the replayer to see it action by action.

Preflop 5♣5♦

  1. Key Hero on the button with 5-5 A small pair: it almost never wins without improving.
  2. HJ raises to 3 bb
Key Open to 3 bb The HJ opens a solid range.
  3. Hero calls 3 bb
Good Call to flop a set We call 3 bb with 100 bb behind: more than 30 times the call, and in position. The set mining math works.

Flop K♦5♥2♠

  1. Good A set of fives! King, five and deuce: we flop a set on a board where our opponent will often have a king.
  2. HJ bets 2.5 bb (33% of the pot)
Key C-bet from the HJ A small bet, as usual on a dry board.
  3. Hero calls 2.5 bb
Good Call on a dry board There are no draws to protect against: we let our opponent keep betting with worse hands.

Turn 9♣

  1. Key Turn: a nine Still no draws.
  2. Hero raises to 25 bb
Good Now, raise for value We raise to build the pot so we can get the rest of the stack in on the river.

River 3♥

  1. Hero bets 42 bb (67% of the pot)
Good Value on the river Two-thirds of the pot: a king with a good kicker calls very often.

Showdown

  1. Good A 146.5 bb pot This is what set mining pays: you lose a small call many times, and every so often you win a huge pot.

A small pair called with the math in our favor turned into a 146.5 bb pot.
